October Meteor Showers 2026

2026-09-17

October is the best meteor month of the fall: the Draconids open it near a moonless sky, the Orionids peak mid-month as the headliner, and the Taurids start building toward Halloween fireball season.

Active this month

October Camelopardalids

ZHR ~5

Peak: October 6

Circumpolar radiant, visible most of the night.

Draconids

ZHR ~5

Peak: October 9

Watch at dusk, not dawn. New moon on the 10th means a dark sky.

Minor, but fast.

Orionids

ZHR ~20

Peak: October 21

This month's best. Moon is ~75% lit — watch after it sets, before dawn.

How to watch

  • Draconids: go out right after dusk — unlike most showers, it gets worse, not better, later at night.
  • Orionids: wait for the moon to set, then watch the pre-dawn hours for the darkest sky.
  • Taurids: low meteor counts but a good fireball ratio — worth a glance on any clear night this month.
